Oh yeah, the genderbent nature is definitely one of my favorite things about their dynamic! I'm not sure if I should have used "sleeping with him" - it's more that I think that he's pushing her to engage with him on a level she isn't sure if she wants, and sex is just a part of him trying to make that connection happen.

I do think it's telling that Buffy instigates their sexual relationship, and had the writers given Spike a different turning point than the attempted rape, I would probably not have suddenly found myself uncomfortable with shipping them despite the other toxic stuff going on in their relationship. There's definitely a lot of layers there.
